The first time I heard of Switchfoot was when the movie "A Walk To Remember" came out. I think I was in 7th grade? I fell in love with Jon Foreman's beautifully raw voice and the band ever since. More-so recently. Their newest album
Hello Hurricane continues to climb the charts in my world of all-time favorites, as well as in the real world. It's a rare thing to have a band that is so musically talented and that creates to spread the message of hope and love through their screaming guitars and penetrating vocals.
It is also rare to have a band that can put on a show with so much energy and talent and where the songs are better live than on the already stunning album. Switchfoot has done just that.
Tonight (2/16) at the
House of Blues - Chicago, Switchfoot played for the first time, and they fucking rocked. I love their new album's heavier sound and it rang through the music hall tonight. There's something about the heavy rock sound and the lyrics broadcasting love and hope for everyone. At times their set list seemed a bit unorganized or scattered but in the long run, it really didn't matter what order they played the songs. (I only wish they would have saved Mess Of Me for a bit later than the second song of the set.) For a the song "You" they took the lights (mostly) off of the band and kept the venue fairly dark which made for an interesting feeling of hearing the song and it not being about theatrics, which a lot of bands these days are all about. Not saying its a bad thing at all, I often would encourage it. The dimmed lights heightened the feel or ambiance, if you will, of the lyrics. The simple lighting and open stage made the show more about the music and it was still one of the best shows I have seen. The energy and talent that the members brought to the stage was totally reflective of the tone of their new album, which if you haven't guessed by now, I highly recommend. :)
If you haven't heard it yet, go out and find Switchfoot's newest album entitled
Hello Hurricane. Listen to the tracks "Mess Of Me", "Hello Hurricane", "The Sound" and for a calmer song listen to "Yet".
Also, Jon Foreman's voice is
absolutely unreal live. I wish he could sing me to sleep every night. I bet I'd have the best dreams.
